Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing housed in a Stoughton old style tip-on” jacket. South Pacific opened on April 7, 1949 at the Majestic Theatre, and enjoyed one of the longest runs on Broadway up to that time (1, 925 performances); it deservedly won the Pulitzer Prize, along with a plethora of Tony Awards. This is the first vinyl reissue of this album cut from the original mono tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound and pressed and plated at RTI. South Pacific was composed by Richard Rodgers, with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and book by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan. The plot of the musical is based on James A. Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 book Tales of the South Pacific and combines elements of several of those stories. Rodgers and Hammerstein believed they could write a musical based on Michener’s work that would be financially successful and, at the same time, would send a strong progressive message on racism.
